TREND ALERT: what the heck is mob wife aesthetic and how did we get here?

Let’s be honest, the “Clean Girl Aesthetic” of 2023, though undeniably problematic due to what it implies for anyone who doesn’t fit the mold, still brought us a lot of good things. It gave many of us who think we can’t leave the house without full makeup an appreciation for more natural looking makeup. It made many of us begin prioritizing skin care. It also brought a new demographic of clients to our salon looking for low maintenance services such as lash lifts and eyebrow laminations. For those who have been regular lash extension clients, it opened the discussion for them to explore different options for styling their lash sets with their lash artist.

As we moved into fall/winter of 2023, lots of vegan leather, pops of red, and power-hour office wear with big tailored shoulders seemed to shine. So it is only fitting that once the temperatures really started to plummet come January, the fur coats emerged from the back of our winter closet storage - and what do you think of when when you hear things like “leather”, “red shoes”, and “boss lady blazers”, with “big fur coats”? How about: Mob Wife Aesthetic. Yes, exactly what you’re thinking. Bigger hair, rich tones, gold jewelry, but the modern twist? Keeping your makeup look tailored and still fairly simplistic, at least in appearance.

The truth is, everything requires balance and moderation. Which is perfect for us because that is literally what the name Siren & Proper is all about.

So what does that mean for lashes & brows?

Think “straight-ish”. OH, and brown. Yes, also brown. Let us explain:

First, let’s take a brief look back at where we started. Since the introduction of Russian Volume sets back in 2015, every lash artist was bound and determined to show off their artistry by creating these ultra dense, perfectly shaped lash sets that honestly did an amazing job of changing and balancing the client’s eye shape.
No trends last forever of course, and with the sleeker hair styles making their way into the norm beginning of 2020 and the "Clean Girl” trend of 2023, we saw a huge up-tick in girls wanting more naturally wispy lash sets.

A visual difference between a more traditional Russian mega volume set and a wispier looking volume set of lashes.

Fox eye lashes & eyeliner lashes & spikes, oh my

Now, in 2024, we are taking the more natural and wispy sets a step further. Spikes, aka, volume extensions applied in tight little bundles to resemble classic extensions, are mixed in to create highly textured lash sets that closely resemble what could be believed as amazing natural lashes paired with a bomb-a** mascara. Lash sets with softer curls and even brown extensions are also gaining popularity. All welcome additions to that “effortlessly chic” appearance of the Clean Girl look. Additionally, a welcome balance to the extravagant Mob Wife Aesthetic.

CURL:

FOX EYE SETS & EYELINER EFFECT SETS

First, let’s discuss curls. In the past, your lash artist may have been inclined to use something called a “D curl” or even a “CC curl” extension in your lash sets, with the former being the curliest. Now, many clients are requesting looks that require a more relaxed curl, so instead we find ourselves reaching for what is known as C, B, or L curl lashes. You don’t need to know exactly how much curl these have, just let your artist know the end result you are trying to achieve and let her expertise guide her into which one is best for you and your specific features.

A mix of C & B Curl lashes were used to create this traditional Russian Volume style Lash set. Notice the softer curl overall.

From the use of these more relaxed curls, we have two specific styles of sets that emerged. Fox-Eye effect lashes, (which are a strong variant to the popular Cat-eye look) and what we call Eyeliner effect lashes which are pretty self explanatory. These names can sometimes be used interchangeably depending on the length of extensions used. See the photos below for reference.

TEXTURE:

WET-EFFECT SETS, STRIP LASH SETS, & A NEW TAKE ON HYBRID

Next, let’s look at some highly-textured sets that use the previously described “spikes”, and a mix of these with regular volume fans. Hang tight, there are A LOT of examples on this one because they truly can vary so drastically.
Again, these lash set titles can sometimes be used interchangeably, but we’ll try and define some differences for you below.

  • Wet Effect/Wet Look: A lash set comprised solely of VERY narrow or closed up fans known as “Spikes”.

  • Strip Lash Look: Visibly softer than the Wet Look set, but with a clear map or structure to it.

  • New Hybrid: Originally, true hybrid sets were made of a mix of volume fans and classic extensions. In new hybrid, we replace the classic extensions with spikes. These sets are less structured or “perfect” looking than the Strip Lash Look.

BROWN LASHES:

Just what the title suggest, brown colored lash extensions. There are different shades of brown available but the most popular are the deep chocolate browns that just soften the overall look of your sets. These lashes are still available in all of the curls and sizes of the traditional black extensions.

OKAY SO, WHAT ABOUT EYEBROWS?

Remember how we mentioned balancing out that big and bold Mob Wife feel? We are clinging to some of what we learned from the Clean Girl era by maintaining the sleek, tailored brow look of course. However, we are finding that trends are slimming down a bit from years prior.. DON’T WORRY, we aren’t talking 90’s and early 2000’s slim. Again, moderation is important here.

Our theory is that we clung SO hard to every brow hair we had in the past 10 years or so to make up for the excessive tweezing we did in our younger years, that we swung too hard in the opposite direction which resulted in very filled in, very large, and recently, very laminated brows. Now, it’s time to relax and find balance, that’s all.
2024 brows are about lifting, elongating, and looking tailored.

LAMINATIONS ARE STILL IN

But there IS difference between good and bad. More on that in a different post though, for now just know that when the appointment is complete, you should never walkout looking like the picture on the left.

Eyebrows that have been too over-directed will grow out with sharp bends resulting in brows that may appear to have gaps and seem over processed. You should leave the salon looking closer to the image on the right.

SHAPE:

Straight-ish

The look of a beautifully arched brow will never die, but lately we are seeing more clients request a “straight” or at least a “straighter” brow. In a straight brow, the arch is almost non-existent while overall, the brow angles upward.
Keeping in mind our theme of moderation, you could opt to just go a bit straighter with your brows which simply means the tail sits higher than the head of the brow while the arch remains either untouched or just softened a bit. See the images below.

SIZE:

MODERATE

Lastly, we are going to consider the overall size of the brows. Like we said previously, we are done clinging to every single brow hair on our face and we are certainly finished with overfilling them.

In 2024 we are going to really step back and take a good look at our own individual, unique features. We are going to recognize and appreciate them. Finally, we are going to choose styles that support them, not swallow them whole.

Remember, it’s all about moderation.. or The Art of being Extra.
